About Carel Smit

Carel joined KPMG in 1985 and has 28 years of audit, tax and advisory experience. He has dedicated the last 21 years to mining. Carel is currently Head of Energy & Natural Resources for KPMG in Southern Africa and is based in Johannesburg. He has helped numerous companies to move from appropriation accounting to IFRS and US GAAP. His passion lies within the mining industry, his excellent IFRS and USGAAP capability, integrity, pragmatism and good business relationships are the cornerstones of his service promise to clients. Carel is a strong leader and excellent communicator; he is also good at putting together highly productive teams. Not afraid to challenge or state opinions, he is empathetic and an excellent mediator and motivator of people around him.
